Building Permits

Building permits are required for all new construction as well as most additions, alterations, and renovations to existing structures. The fee is determined by the square footage of the structure to be built. Contact the License & Permits Department at (770) 963-4002 ext. 206 for more information. Five to Seven business days are required to process a building permit.  Permit applications can be emailed to labland@cityofauburn-ga.org

* If you are obtaining a building permit, please note that any electrical, plumbing, hvac, or low voltage  work will require a separate permit.  These permits should be obtained by the individual or contractor who will be responsible for performing the trade work.  The state card hold must sign the application and their current state card and business license must be verified.

Building Inspections

A City contracted inspector will perform residential inspections as well as inspections of commercial buildings. Other types of inspections performed by the City's 3rd Party are:

  • Detention pond inspections
  • Development inspections
  • Erosion inspections
  • Paving inspections
  • Pool inspections
  • Site inspections

Building inspections shall take place within two business days after being scheduled.

Commercial Building Inspections

Commercial buildings must also be approved by the Barrow or Gwinnett County Fire Marshal. In addition, food-service businesses must contact the Barrow or Gwinnett County Health Department.
